CULTURAL AWARENESS

2011-2012 Faculty Development Opportunities

The ARC (Access, Retention and Completion)  Institute for Latino Student Success

Member institutions are invited to develop an institutional team of 4-5 participants to attend a two-day, all expense paid (except travel) workshop on September 14-15, 2012 at the Millennium Centre in Johnson City, TN. The objective of the ARC Institute for Latino Student Success is to help prepare ACA member institutions for an increase of Latinos students considering ACA member colleges within the next five years.

At the Institute, teams will learn best practices for helping students achieve success in higher education, understand the cultural needs of Latino populations and develop an initiative to support success of Latino students on their home campuses.

 A completed application packet requires:

  • A complete online application identifying each team member. Teams will consist of at least four participants and must have one representative from each of the following areas on campus: a) Student Life, b) Admissions/Financial Aid, c) Academics and d) Student body.  A fifth team member is optional and may be chosen from any area. One application per team is recommended.
  •  A one page proposal, single spaced, on why your campus is interested in this opportunity and what you hope to achieve through this process. Please do not send your proposal as a separate attachment.
  •  Letter of recommendation from the institution's Chief Academic Officer sent electronically to apply@acaweb.org. Letters should be on letterhead and emailed in a PDF format.

Teams are expected to begin preparatory work prior to the Institute in order to have a better understanding of institutional need in regards to reaching out and retaining Latino populations.

Each institutional team becomes eligible to apply for up to a $12,000 mini grant to design a specific initiative to assist access, retention, or completion of Latino students. Time will be dedicated at the Institute and throughout the request for proposals period for technical assistance regarding development of this proposal.

“I fell in love with the neighborhoods we visited, each with its own ethnic flavor. I had not realized the wealth of diversity that the city offered, usually in concentrated areas of the city that offered up fabulous ethnic restaurants, museums, and shops. The Navy Yard, the architecture, and the Chicago Art Institute were wonderful experiences for my colleagues and me.”

Salzburg Faculty Fellowships

WWe invite ACA Faculty to submit proposals to participate in Salzburg Global Seminar programs for 2012.

The Salzburg Global Seminar is a unique international institution focused on global change—a place dedicated to candid dialog, fresh thinking, and the search for innovative but practical solutions. Founded in 1947, it challenges current and future leaders to develop creative ideas for solving global problems, and has brought more than 26,000 participants from 150 countries and regions to take part in its programs. The Seminar’s programmatic home, Schloss Leopoldskron, an 18th century castle in Salzburg, Austria, offers a safe, attractive and, perhaps most importantly, neutral setting for productive interchange.

The program provides an opportunity for ACA faculty to participate in the international programs of the Salzburg Global Seminar, an opportunity that might otherwise not be available to them. As ACA institutions strive to globalize their campuses, the program plays a pivotal role in introducing ACA faculty to an international network of influential people and provides them with an expanded network that encourages new ways of thinking to influence their scholarship and work.

All faculty from ACA member institutions are invited to submit an application and proposal.  Please review the Salzburg Guidelines for eligibility and responsibilities.

Applications are no  longer being accepted.
